Decorating for the holidays when your house is for sale

Well the day after Thanksgiving is my official holiday decorating day.  Back when I was a kid I remember my parents made me wait until 2 weeks before Christmas to buy our tree- it was absolute torture!  As a grown-up I’ve thrown that rule out the window and my tree goes up this weekend, a full 4 weeks before Christmas (sorry mom!).

So what are your options if you currently have your home on the market, can you still decorate for the holidays?  Absolutely, but keep a few things in mind.

First and most importance is moderation.  For every Christmas stockingor string of garland you put up, take one of your everyday decorations down.  Clutter is the enemy, so even with new decorations going up, you have to keep your home clean, neat and clutter free.  One recommendation I have, when you buy your tree this year, think about getting on that is tall and skinny so that it doesn’t take up as much space.

Second, take this opportunity to do a little creative sprucing up.  That tree you are going to buy- make it a fresh tree b/c they smell so good.  Now is also the perfect time to bake an apple pie scented or a plate of cookies for those prospective buyers.  Put some battery powered candles in the windows and a pretty wreath on the front door.  Take advantage of all the beautiful decoration to make your home even more warm and inviting.

Third, make sure and enjoy yourself.  Selling your home is stressful, keeping it clean adds even more work.  So while your home should look its best, give your self a little break and be sure and enjoy the season.   Don’t fret too much about the

A couple other winter time tips:  don’t forget to turn up the thermostat when you have showings, when it is cold out, nothing says “Welcome Home- Buy Me” to a buyer more than a warm and inviting home.  And be sure and keep your sidewalks and driveways shoveled and salted.

Hope you have a wonderful and safe holiday season!!
